Summer School Methods in Surface Science 2024
The Summer School Methods in Surface Science will take place at TU Clausthal from Sunday 6.10.2024 to Friday 11.10.2024. It is aimed at master students in the fields of natural and materials science and at PhD students with interest in the characterization of surfaces of materials. The Summer School will bring together students from University of Ljubljana and TU Clausthal. Its academic program is complemented by an excursion and social evening events. The language of the summer school is English.
Contents and Schedule
In three lectures (3 h each) you will learn fundamentals of topical experimental methods to study structural properties and chemical composition of surfaces and bulk materials: electron microscopy, electron diffraction at surfaces, electron spectroscopy for surface analysis, and secondary-ion mass spectrometry. The acquired knowledge will be applied and deepened in laboratory courses: in small groups of typically three students you will perform experiments with a low-energy electron microscope (LEEM), a scanning Auger electron microscope (SAM), a photoelectron spectrometer and a secondary-ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). The summer school concludes with a seminar-like colloquium of the participating groups. Each group is expected to present an oral presentation about one of the experiments they have conducted. The schedule of the program allows for sufficient time to analyze the experimental results and to prepare the final presentation.
