The activities of the Institute of Energy Research and Physical Technologies (IEPT) are centered arount the theme "Tailored material systems for efficient energy harvesting" with applications in the areas of photovoltaics, energy-autonomous sensors to increase energy efficiency and micro fuel cells. Using the existing expertise of IEPT researchers in the fields of nano-structured surface modification for efficient light coupling, surface analysis, femtosecond laser materials processing and sensors and high-temperature sensors, a unique position in the field of energy research is established. Both basic physical aspects as well as application related issues are addressed with the aim of developing functional models. This results in medium-term research priorities, the study of optical and solid-state sensors to increase energy efficiency as well as the investigations of nanoscale materials for energy conversion. The Institute works closely with the Energy Research Center of Lower Saxony and the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, both based on the energy-campus in Goslar.
